Arsenal: Best current XI

We have become so used to Arsenal being in the Champions League that it would be weird if they weren’t - but that could become a reality. Here is what I consider to be their best 11 as they look to qualify for Europe's most elite competition once again this season:

Goalkeeper: Emiliano Viviano

This is a position Arsenal have struggled with since the Jens Lehman era and Viviano could temporarily solve their problem - but he is only on a season-long loan.

Right-back: Bacary Sagna

Not always reliable, Sagna is, in my opinion, a weak point for Arsenal. He is good going forward but lacks defensive qualities - do Arsenal need a replacement?

Centre-back: Thomas Vermaelen

Very sturdy at the back, Vermaelen is a consistent performer for Arsenal. Fast, strong and with great positioning, the Belgian is a top class defender.

Centre-back: Laurent Koscielny

Koscielny is, in my opinion unreliable but is still far better than Per Mertesacker.

Left-back: Kieran Gibbs

Fast, confident defensively and an attacking threat, Gibbs is very promising. One of the Premier League’s best left-backs, Gibbs is one for the future.

Holding-midfield: Jack Wilshere

Wilshere has had his injury problems, but that doesn’t mean he can’t go right to the top.

Centre-midfield: Santi Cazorla

One of the best players in the Premier League, Cazorla is just one of many top-class Spanish exports.

Centre-midfield: Mesut Ozil

Perfect for Arsenal’s style of play, Ozil was signed on transfer deadline day for £42.5 million - but is he worth it?

Right-wing: Theo Walcott

With electrifying pace, tricky footwork and a tidy finish, Walcott will frighten defences around the country.

Left-wing: Lukas Podolski

With a ferocious shot and great pace, Podolski is not always a first-team player, but I believe he should be a regular.

Striker: Olivier Giroud

With him having a fantastic season so far, Giroud could be a key part of Arsenal’s campaign. If he is not performing, they have very little to fall back on.
