Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan insists his side will be stronger and more ruthless in defence this season after being weak at the back throughout the last campaign.
Villa conceded 69 goals last season, and were on the wrong end of some embarrassing score lines, including an 8-0 defeat at Chelsea.
"We have taken the experiences of last season and made sure we have used them in a positive way. Yes there were some tough defeats, tough moments, tough games but we have used those to make ourselves better and stronger, " he said.
The Midlands club performed well towards the end of the season and finished strongly. Guzan knows that, with such a young team, the first season of Premier League football is a pivotal experience.
"To have that one year experience for the guys in the Barclays premier League - including myself - it was vital. For us now, it's about trying not to concede easy, soft goals. We want to make it difficult for teams to score against us week after week after week," he added.
Manager Paul Lambert managed to secure a new contract for sought-after striker Christian Benteke, as well as bringing in a couple of new additions to his young squad. In his second season at the club, the Scot will be looking to improve on last season's 15th placed finish.
"The manager must be getting headaches but they're headaches he wants. That's what you need in a team - competition for places - and you need to make it difficult for your manager. That's what he wants too, of course," Guzan concluded.
