Newly appointed Everton manager, Roberto Martinez has confirmed that he will offer left back Leighton Baines a new contract at the club, after the loyalty the England international showcased in the summer transfer window.
Ex-Everton manager, David Moyes, wanted to bring Leighton Baines to Old Trafford during the summer, and more than one bid rejected by the Toffees.
United were initially interested in adding the services of duo Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini, as Moyes was keen on strengthening both his midfield as defence with familiar faces.
While United were trying to tie up a deal for the pair, Baines showed his loyalty by staying at the Merseyside club, whereas Belgian midfielder Fellaini handed in a transfer request and joined the Red Devils on transfer deadline day in a £27.5m fee.
Martinez is impressed with the England international's professional attitude and went on to say:
“Leighton is the most important player for us now and in the future,” said the Everton manager.
"We want to do what we can to reward that and let him know he deserves our appreciation.
“Contract talks will be opened but it is not just about the contract, it is about making sure he knows how much we want him and how much we appreciate him.”
