The Gunners chief is plotting a January move for a defensive midfielder, and two of his summer targets – Ilkay Gundogan of Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender – are top of his shopping list for the winter window.
But the report claims Wenger is ready to raid the German market even further, with the club considering January bids for Schalke wonder-kid Julian Draxler and possibly even Gundogan’s Dortmund teammate Marco Reus as well.
Arsenal interest in Reus and Draxler has cooled slightly since the signing of Ozil, but the fact remains that Wenger now sees the Bundesliga as the top pool of talent in Europe.
Having previously looked to his native France for cheap signings, Wenger is ready to use his chequebook to recruit the best from the German top flight.
There’s already a sizeable German contingent at the Emirates Stadium – Ozil joins Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski, Gedion Zelalem, Thomas Eisfeld and Serge Gnabry at the club.
