Tokyo is to host the 2020 Olympic Games, it has been announced.

The decision was reached by the International Olympic Committee at its 125th session, following two rounds of voting.

Tokyo, alongside Madrid and Istanbul, were selected as the three candidates host cities heading into today's final presentations and secret ballot.

Tokyo passed into the final vote, avoiding the play-off vote to eliminate one of the candidates.

It was Madrid who were eliminated, losing the play-off by 49 votes to 45, in a close encounter.

The IOC then reconvened ahead of their final casting of votes, a straight shoot-out between Tokyo and Istanbul.

Istanbul made sure to encapsulate the Turkish culture, focusing on the natural beauty of the nation, and highlighting the opportunity to bring the world and the next generations closer together by taking the Olympic Games to a Muslim country.

'Our similarities outweigh our differences' was a line that was prominent in the Istanbul party's presentations and videos.

The Turkish committee also repeatedly underlined how cost effective their Olympic Games would be, should they be selected, whilst attempting to allay transportation fears.

Tokyo's presentation had made large references to their developed transport network and squeaky-clean track record in terms of doping.

Japan have never had an athlete found to have been doping, something that Spain and Turkey could not boast of themselves. Doubts over the transport network of Istanbul were also successfully targeted by the Japanese committee.

Tokyo delivered a powerful and extremely well-polished final presentation.

At 21:20 BST, the result of the final vote was in, and it was to be Tokyo's day.

Tokyo ran out as comfortable victors, with 60 votes to the 36 votes obtained by Istanbul.
