Jose 'Pepe' Reina will complete a move to Spanish Champions Barcelona at the end of the season, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Spaniard is spending the 2013-2014 season on-loan with former manager Rafa Benitez at Napoli after he lost his place in the Liverpool side due to the signing of Sunderland stopper Simon Mignolet.

And reports from Reina's home country suggest that this has led to the Reds paving the way for the 'keeper to seal a switch to the Catalan giants.

The 31-year-old was linked with a move to Barcelona throughout the summer as a possible replacement for Victor Valdes, until the latter announced he would see out the final year of his contract with the club.

Reds boss Brendan Rogers claimed in July that it was these rumours that led him to purchasing Mignolet to dislodge Reina as first-choice goalkeeper in the squad.

He said: "As manager I was led to believe we were going to get an offer for Pepe Reina that would probably see him leave the club. At that stage we started our search for another goalkeeper and we found Simon Mignolet, who is top class and one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.

"As events transpired, Pepe's move didn't quite happen and that left us with two very good goalkeepers. Both would have been fighting for the No 1 position. An opportunity then arose for Pepe that we felt as a football club was probably best for him."

Reina later responded by outlining his disappointment at Liverpool's decision to loan him to Napoli.

He said: "It is only natural that I would be disappointed that the Liverpool management agreed to loan me to Napoli without telling me first. I thought that I deserved better than that even though I understand that difficult decisions have to be taken in football.

“I told the manager that I wanted to play for Liverpool and that Barcelona would only become an option for me if the opportunity arrived, like the rumours said it would, as it would be a chance for me to go back home.

“When it didn’t come I was happy to fight for my place so I was surprised that Liverpool decided it was in the club’s interests to send me to Napoli instead."

Belgian international Mignolet has started his Liverpool career impressively with a last minute save from Jon Walters to preserve his new side's win on the opening day of the campaign against Stoke at Anfield.

And reports, it appears that the club management have decided that there will be no way back for the popular Reina in a red shirt.

The 'keeper made 395 appearances for the Anfield side, winning the FA Cup in 2006 and the Carling Cup in 2012.

The move would represent a return to the club where his career started in 2000, where Reina made 30 appearance before moving on to Villarreal.
