When someone mentions a particularly embarrassing miss, many previous examples immediately spring to mind.
Historically, Ronny Rosenthal's scarcely believable effort in front of Villa Park's Holte End is presented as the ultimate miss, as the Israeli international inexplicably struck the crossbar after effortlessly rounding helpless goalkeeper Nigel Spink.
The Premier League in particular has seen many other countless examples, with Nwankwo Kanu's seemingly impossible 2004 lob for West Brom against Middlesbrough and Ryan Giggs' wayward 2005 strike at Old Trafford providing particularly uncomfortable memories.
Chris Iwelumo's now infamous miss on his Scotland debut in a World Cup qualifier against Norway in 2008 is another classic, with the look of disbelief and sheer horror on his face painfully evident as he totally missed the target from merely yards away.
However, this miss can certainly claim to rank among the most embarrassing in football history. In a friendly match between Macedonian outfit Horizont Turnovo and Bulgarian heavyweights CSKA Sofia, Tome Petrov found himself with the ball at his feet just inches from the goal line after a corner was flicked on by his teammate.
What should have been a simple finish quickly turned ugly, however, as Petrov proceeded to crash his effort against the underside of the crossbar.
