Long gone are the days where we saw the likes of the Nation of Domination and D-Generation X revitalising the WWE with their antics; as the years have passed so has the standard of some of the stables we have been lucky, or not-so lucky enough to see.
Granted, the likes of Evolution where Triple H, Ric Flair, current WWE Champion Randy Orton and former WWE superstar Dave Batista ran riot on the Raw roster before splitting, and who can forget the impact The Nexus had on the entire WWE led by Preston’s very own Wade Barrett.
But other than these two factions, who has really stuck in our minds? Who have we thought will genuinely go down in the history books as one of the greatest teams? Which group is the future of the WWE? Well, as WWE fans we are extremely lucky, because we have not one, but two of the most exciting stables in recent years. I am talking about The Shield and the Wyatt Family.
We each have our own opinion, for those of you who watch NXT like me, you would have seen these guys in action before their made their man roster debuts and you would have instantly recognised raw talent which could be utilised so well in the main roster and now they are proving to us why they are the future of the business we love.
But although they remain different in various aspects, which of the two is better; The Shield or the Wyatt Family? In my series I want to take a look at superstars or stables who have the ability to be the future of the WWE - and what better place to start with than two of the most exciting groups in recent years?
With The Shield, you could argue that we have seen the likes of Edge and Christian as well as The Sandman make their way down to the ring via the fans and stairs. But it is not just that; let’s start from the beginning.
It's when those six infamous words hit the PA system; 'Sierra Hotel India Echo Lima Delta' and the fans go in a frenzy, looking around to see where The Shield would make their way down from and ambush whoever they wanted to.
It’s the goosebumps they bring out, the fact that you are constantly looking around to see where they will appear from and when they are seen we see three imposing figures who look like they mean business; and whoever is on the receiving end needs to be worried.
Watch the entrance on YouTube; especially their match at WrestleMania, fantastic entrances and although now we know where they make their way down from, it is still as entertaining.
Moving on to the entrance of the Wyatt Family; eerie, different, never really been done before. This is because before their actual entrance, the lights turn off and we see a small video package on the titan-tron, Bray Wyatt holding up his lantern with Erick Rowan and Luke Harper behind him, whispering 'we're here' and the fans start screaming.
Two simple words gets so much reaction from us fans, and then the eerie 'Broken Out Of Love' theme plays and we can only see Wyatt’s face via the lantern, eventually he takes a seat, blows out the lantern and once the lights turn on, the entrance is over.
Although this is repeated every week, or whenever they decide to make an appearance, you cannot deny that they do frighten you a little, that you do not know what their next move is, an ambush? Who knows, until the lights turn on.
This one is extremely close to call, both entrances are great and if they are ever to go head to head then we can see these entrances back to back; but for now, my opinion would say The Shield have the better entrance, simply because it is all of a sudden, the superstars in the ring who are about to get ambushed have minimal time to react, whereas the Wyatt Family waste a lot more time in getting to the ring, still effective; but my vote goes to The Shield.
If we break down both groups we can clearly see which group has more depth in terms of ability and being the whole package. We have Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins from The Shield up against Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan representing the Wyatt Family. Now, it is easier, you can already tell which group has more depth and you know who my vote will go to.
Ambrose, outstanding in every department, Rollins; outstanding wrestler and great on the microphone, Reigns, perhaps needs more work but for someone who has not been wrestling as long, fantastic progress. Bray Wyatt, who can doubt his microphone display and is surprisingly very athletic for his size.
Erick Rowan, good wrestler, on the microphone? Not so much, and the same applies to Luke Harper. Agreed, Rowan and Harper do not need to talk to come across as imposing, but I feel that The Shield at the moment are the whole package, they look dominant, they have the microphone skills, definitely the wrestling skills and there is a reason why they are involved in this massive corporation storyline.
the Wyatt Family are great, because of Bray Wyatt, you could replace Rowan and Harper with any wrestler who dresses and acts the same and you would not complain, but if you take out the likes of Reigns or Rollins from The Shield, you do not have that same feeling about the group, these three make The Shield what they are.
This is a much easier one, my vote definitely goes to The Shield once again and they go 2-0 up because as I have said, I believe individually The Shield have a lot more depth about them than the Wyatt Family do, obviously they will improve as they get more time on the main roster, but for me at the minute you cannot argue that Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns are superior to Wyatt, Rowan and Harper.
Both groups have interesting gimmicks. The Shield are a group who fight for justice, the possess excellent teamwork and a willingness to sacrifice themselves for the good of their stable, and they achieve victories by overwhelming their opponents with superior number after incapacitating their opponents.
Again, they want to end injustice in the WWE and they were successful in their earlier days. However, although they are in the corporation storyline, which is great for them as it elevates their status into that of a serious stable, if they already weren’t; but now they seem like a group who can easily be hired out to work for someone, like we saw many years ago in the APA.
They have lost their feeling of dominance just a little and that is what the WWE need to avoid, making sure they don’t seem out to be money-driven, but want to focus on their main task which is to end injustice.
the Wyatt Family, their gimmick is that of a backwoods cult; Bray is the leader, compared to The Shield which has no leader, and everyone follows Bray’s lead, they do as he says and are basically his followers, hence the sheep mask Erick Rowan wears.
Bray’s style is like a southern preacher who wants the world to listen, but does so in his own creepy way in which we are intrigued by what he has to say, his constant messages of following the buzzards and mentioning Sister Abigail continue to interest us as we have never seen this gimmick before in the WWE, it is fresh, unique and we are interested by it.
Right now, although The Shield have it all going for them as they are champions, I have to give this one to the Wyatt Family, a great gimmick so credit to Dusty Rhodes who alongside Bray Wyatt developed this gimmick, and again credit to Wyatt for staying interesting every week and continuing to creep out the children and scare them, and making most of the adults understand his cause and wanting to follow his lead.
The impact they have both had, it is quite unfair because The Shield have been on our television screens every week for almost a year now, whereas the Wyatt Family have only recently made their presence felt on the main roster. So let’s not count it in that way, let’s take a look at the first two/three months of both groups appearing.
The Shield, making their debut at Survivor Series and taking out the likes of Ryback and John Cena and costing them the WWE Championships. Compared to the Wyatt Family, who have taken out Kane; and also R-Truth, yes R-Truth; so for me based on the first couple of months I have to give this to The Shield, fought against many big name superstars consistently but that is no fault of Bray, we have to understand they are being eased into the main roster, and it was difficult to understand why so-called wrestling fans were disappointed with Bray’s first match.
Of course he wasn’t going to be able to show off his abilities, it was a Ring of Fire match, against Kane; not someone like Dolph Ziggler. So we have to give the Wyatt Family a little more time, but at this moment in time it is fair to say The Shield have had a bigger impact, but that could all change.
Again, another close one because Seth Rollins can talk; we know that. Roman Reigns, not so much, he needs some work but Dean Ambrose? Wow, there is a reason people say he is better than CM Punk and Chris Jericho combined on the microphone and if you take a look at his stuff as Jon Moxley in the independent scene, you will know why.
Amazing on the microphone and he still needs to showcase it a lot more whenever he gets the opportunity to do so in the WWE, he will but only time will tell when he is able to do so. Compared to the Wyatt Family, Erick Rowan, no; Luke Harper, no, both are not capable of cutting a serious promo which is why the burden falls onto the shoulders of one Bray Wyatt; and boy does he do a spectacular job.
Confidence is the key factor there and he displays it so well, his unique style is so compelling and he is so convincing as a leader that many of us just want to follow what he does, because he makes it sound so interesting; drawing every single fan in is what it takes to be great on the microphone and Bray Wyatt does exactly that.
If it was based on individuals, I would hand it to Dean Ambrose without thinking, but because it is a group, I still have to give it to The Shield, simply because Bray Wyatt does a tremendous job but he carries his group, whereas Ambrose and Rollins do the majority of the microphone work, yet do it so well; very close to call.
So, only considering these factors so far; I would have to say that at this moment in time, The Shield are the better group. Simply because I agree they have been here longer which does make it a little unfair comparing the Wyatt Family to them, but based on the aspects above it is fair to say the choices are correct.
The Shield have the titles for a reason, they are just that good. the Wyatt Family do have the capability to eclipse The Shield, in fact I would not be surprised and I do honestly think both groups are the future of the WWE, but as of now The Shield are just ahead of the Wyatt Family.
