Clint Dempsey reached 100 senior international appearances by captaining the US in their 3-1 loss against Costa Rica on Friday.
The former Fulham and Spurs forward now plays in the MLS for Seattle Sounders and his previous experiences in the Europa League show quality that has sometimes been lacking for the USMNT.
Speaking to ussoccer.com, Dempsey says he is pleased with his national team career: “I have been happy with the way it’s all went. To be able to play in two World Cups, winning a few Gold Cups, getting to the finals of the Confederations Cup is special.
"It’s been a great experience and hopefully we can qualify for the next World Cup and make it even better."
Having scored his first national team goal against England in Chicago, Dempsey went on to become the first American to compete in a European final with Fulham and later the first American to score a hat-trick in the Premier League in a 5-2 defeat of Newcastle.
