Sam Allardyce could be set to bolster his striking options with the signing of Mladen Petric.
Petric is free to sign for West Ham United outside of the transfer window having yet to find a new club since his release by Fulham.
Reading had been reported to be interested in the Croatian international but, according to reports in The Mirror, The Hammers are now in pole position to land his signature.
The Irons would have to add Petric to their Premier League squad, but having only registered 23 of a possible 25 they should be able to snap up the experienced front man.
Allardyce's search for striking reinforcement had been public news after vice-chairman Karren Brady revealed the club had missed out on a trio of deadline day signings.
Writing in her column in The Sun, Brady said, "On the final day of the window, we miss out on Chelsea strike duo Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku, plus Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner."
Petric was released by Fulham having only managed to find the net five times in 24 appearances following his move from Hamburg on a free transfer last summer.
The Mirror have reported that sources close to Petric have said, although he is yet to have a medical at Upton Park, he is close to signing for the club.
