Failure to make any notable acquisitions over the summer, Pardew's Newcastle squad lacks any real depth, and could be caught out if they suffer a succession of injuries.

The appointment of Joe Kinnear as director of football has already raised doubts over the manager's long-term future at St James' Park. He cannot afford too many under-par performances from his team on the pitch.
