Ateltico Madrid forward Diego Costa says he was close to joining Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

The Brazilian hitman was the subject of a £21 million pound bid from Liverpool which was rejected by the Spanish side.

Since then Costa has penned a new contract at the Vicente Calderon, but now admits he seriously contemplated a switch to Anfield.

"I had the chance to leave. I was about to do so," he told Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo.

"Liverpool are a great team. But, after so much fighting and overcoming many difficulties to earn my place at Atletico, how was I going to leave?

"I thought that it was very important for me to continue growing in this club and to play here for many years.

"Here I have the trust and respect of the people. My feelings towards Atleti? I know the world of football."

Liverpool failed with their attempts to land a marque signing over the summer, but did add eight new faces to their squad, including the likes of Mamadou Sakho, Simon Mignolet and Iago Aspas.

Brendan Rodgers's side currently sit atop the Premier League having won all three of their fixtures so far.
