Statistics published by French newspaper L'Equipe show that six of the worlds 10 most popular sportsmen are footballers. This is according to the amount of 'fans' each one of them has on Facebook.

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list of most popular sportsmen followed by Barcelona favourite Lionel Messi and former Manchester United midfielder and worldwide celebrity David Beckham in third place completes an all footballing top 3.

Retired American basket player Michael Jordan leads three other basketball players in the popularity table coming behind the three football legends in 4th place.

Kaka, Andres Iniesta and Neymar also made it into the top 10 list making the total number of footballers making it onto the list a grand total of six.

Popular sportsmen such as athlete Usain Bolt, golfer Tiger Woods and tennis player Rafa Nadal are noticeably missing from the list giving the indication that footballers are the ones who have the biggest fan following on a world wide scale.

Football seems to be a language understood worldwide and now it appears that the beautiful game is also the most popular game.

Millions of eyes will be watching the World Cup next year where five of the footballing legends to make the list are likely to be competing in Rio.
