Everton's Tim Howard has heaped praise on his international skipper, Landon Donovan, after the USA sealed their place at Brazil 2014.

A 2-0 victory over Mexico ensured Jurgen Klinsmann's men will feature at a seventh consecutive World Cup next summer.

Donovan scored the second having assisted Eddie Johnson for the first as Howard and co. qualified with two games to spare.

Donovan has enjoyed two loan spells at Goodison Park, meaning Howard is as well qualified as anyone else to comment on the LA Galaxy man and speaking to USSoccer.com he said: "He's a guy that when he's on the field, puts fear in the opponent. We've got some key guys and you can't mark Clint (Dempsey) out of the game when you have to worry about Landon."

With over 150 caps to his name, the 31-year-old has been a key part of the US team for over a decade and Howard was keen to highlight how consistent he's been over that period, saying: "Landon is one of these guys that give you a seven or eight out of ten every game and he can be counted on for that. That's not easy to come by."

The Stars and Stripes are one of ten teams to have already qualified for next summer's showpiece event and Howard is confident that sealing qualification early on will benefit the team.

"We're young enough at the moment that the next six to eight months we're going to grow and get better. The mix is right and we just need to mature a little bit more and I feel good about our chances. But we'll see what the draw looks like," concluded the Everton shot-stopper.
