On-loan Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois convinced Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur target Toby Alderweireld to snub a move to the Premier League, in favour of joining him at Atletico Madrid.
The 24-year-old defender was heavily linked with a move to England during the summer, when it became apparent he would be leaving Ajax at the end of 2012/13.
Alderweireld had built a reputation as one of the most exciting young prospects in the Eredeivisie at the Amsterdam Arena last season, which prompted a raft of interest in his signature.
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas reportedly wanted to bring the Belgium international to north London, while Brendan Rodgers was also keen on the versatile stopper's services on Merseyside.
However, a move to Tottenham or Liverpool never came to fruition, particularly after Chelsea loanee Courtois - who is enjoying his third consecutive season away from Stamford Bridge - persuaded Alderweireld to move to the Vicente Calderon over Anfield or White Hart Lane.
"I had always wanted to play for Atletico but there were others interested [in me during the summer]," he told Los Rojiblancos' official site.
"Then, Thibaut and I talked and he recommended I join Atletico, but as I've said I already wanted to come here since the beginning."
