The father and agent of Arsenal's new superstar Mesut Özil has hit back at Real Madrid president Florentino Perez over claims the former Real playmaker was 'obsessed with women' and 'not a good professional'.
Özil's father has reacted angrily to these comments from the Madrid president, and has accused Perez of a smear campaign against his son - Mustafa Özil has also threatened legal action if the allegations persist.
"Just because a person earns a lot of money, he is not automatically a man of honour. And Perez is not a man of honour," he told German newspaper Bild.
"Mesut has been turned into a scapegoat. And I’m the greedy father who has just been waiting for the big money move.
"It’s a set-up, and lousy business. We will legally defend themselves. The people who know me know how professional I am."
After signing Gareth Bale for a world-record fee on transfer deadline day, the sale of Mesut Özil has been unpopular amongst the Madrid faithful.
Many fans were heard chanting 'don't sell Özil' at Bale's unveiling ceremony, and these allegations against the ex-Madrid playmaker are widely regarded as a justification to the fans for his sale.
It will be difficult to dampen Arsenal fans' enthusiasm over the signing of Özil, but Perez's claims could well resurface should the £42.4million record signing fail to hit the heights as expected.
