England are set to drop three places to 17th in the latest UEFA rankings, which leaves them in danger of being in the third pot if they qualify for the World Cup.
A win over lowly Moldova and draw with Ukraine won't enough for the Three Lions to retain their position as they find themselves leapfrogged in the rankings by USA and Chile, according to a Reddit user who calculated all the recent results.
The USA have assured their spot at the Finals with an impressive streak of 13 wins from 14, which included a friendly victory over Germany, and now rank above England, although if England get wins over Montenegro and Poland they'll be able to reclaim their spot.
FIFA's ranking system has been criticised in the past, with some favouring the ELO system (where England rank sixth) but it's importance will not have been overlooked by England and other nations.
The World Cup Finals group stage draw will be held in December and the rankings will determine which pot teams are put into.
At the moment, Brazil are guaranteed to be in Pot 1 because they're hosts and provided they qualify, Spain will also be in Pot 1.
England currently sit in a precarious position, on the border of pots two and three. If they are placed in Pot Three then they will be in danger of being placed against two top teams in the group stage (for example: if the draw happened on the rankings right now England's group could be Brazil-Netherlands-England-Japan).
The rankings will be shaken up again next month, when the final group stage qualifiers are played and England will have a better idea of their position but for now, the games against Montenegro and Poland are huge must wins.
