Premier League: Five toughest footballers (4)

3. Stuart Pearce

His 'Psycho' nickname gives you a clue as to why Stuart Pearce makes the top five.

The former England Under 21 boss walked off the pitch after breaking his leg playing for West Ham United. Pearce flew into tackles and had a bullet-like shot, scoring superb free-kicks on occasion.

His quiet demeanour disguised his passion but the quieter they are the more dangerous they normally turn out to be. The FA were probably too scared to sack Pearce in fear for their personal safety, so they let his contract as Under 21 manager expire instead.

Pearce was not a violent man on the pitch, but you would have to go a long way to make the defender feel any pain whatsoever.
