The Boston Red Sox entered their Wednesday night matchup agains the Tampa Bay Rays in great spirits after the Tuesday return of pitcher Clay Buchholz helped them to a 2-0 win.

Boston came out aggressive early in a bid to increase their division lead and quickly ran out to a 3-1 lead. The Rays did manage to battle back, with an Evan Longoria single in the seventh and a James Loneyhomer in the eighth tying the game at three as it headed to extra innings.

The top of the 10th inning however, was a thing of beauty for the Red Sox as they once again illustrated the determination and depth they have throughout the line-up in late game situations.

Red Sox manager John Farrell sent Mike Carp into the game to pinch-hit for Johnny Gomes with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the 10th. The Red Sox have developed a reputation for getting big hits late in the game and this game was no different, as Carp crushed the first pitch he got into centre-field for a grand slam to give the Red Sox a 7-3 lead.

Junichi Tazawa then came into the game in the bottom of the 10th, to finish the game and give the Red Sox the victory.

The victory means the Red Sox lead the AL-East by 9.5 games and look good to win the division.

The Rays on the other hand are now only one game ahead of the New York Yankees in the race to claim the second wildcard spot in the race for October baseball.

The Yankees have been on a good run of form, mainly due to the hot bat of Alfonso Soriano, a direct contrast to the patchy form being shown by the Rays.

The wildcard race has really become competitive then, meaning the final weeks of the baseball season will be as exciting as ever.
