Tottenham Hotspurs manager Andre Villas Boas has revealed that new defender Vlad Chiriches is still awaiting a work permit and is therefore set to miss a potential debut this weekend, according to the London Evening Standard.
Chiriches was signed from Steaua Bucharest in the summer for a fee in the region of £8million.
The centre-back was one of a number arrivals to White Hart Lane in the transfer window but his move was somewhat overshadowed by a number of other bigger money deals following the world record sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
Nonetheless expectation are high for the 23-year-old who has played 20 times for the Romanian national team.
However, AVB revealed ahead of Saturday's clash with Norwich that Chiriches is still awaiting paper-work thats makes him eligible in England.
The 35-year-old manager did also dismiss the potential for any long term issue with his new defender.
He said: “His work permit is not finalised yet. It's a process that takes a bit more time,
“He's fit and training and was involved in both games for Romania, but there's a possibility we won't see him involved.”
Chiriches also revealed that he is excited at the prospect of English football.
Speaking on Twitter, the Romanian had this to say: “I love English football and Tottenham is a big club with a big history,
“I hope to play lots of games and why not? Maybe we can challenge at the top of the league.”
The North Londoners have had a mixed start to the season, tight victories against Crystal Palace and Swansea were followed by a defeat to bitter rivals Arsenal.
