Arsenal are plotting a potential move for Juventus defender Martin Caceres, according to the Daily Star.

26-year-old Caceres, who has won 51 caps for his native Uruguay, has impressed for the Serie A giants with a series of consistent defensive displays since he permanently moved to the Juventus Stadium from La Liga outfit Sevilla in May 2012.

Arsenal, who completed perhaps the deal of the entire transfer window with their £42.5 million signing of German international Mesut Ozil on deadline day, were believed to be searching for defensive reinforcements this summer and reportedly made contact with Juve over a potential deal for Caceres.

A switch to North London never materialised for the former Barcelona man, however, but the Daily Star's unnamed sources suggest that both Arsenal and Rafael Benitez's Napoli may be primed to re-visit a potential switch for Caceres at the end of the current campaign.

A further move for the defender during January appears to be doubtful, though, as he is currently awaiting surgery on a knee injury picked up in a recent international fixture and could be facing an extended spell on the sidelines.
