Fiorentina were dealt a double blow during their 1-1 draw with Cagliari earlier today as striker Mario Gomez not only spurned a golden chance to give his side the lead, but also picked up a horrific injury as he spooned his shot wide.
The German international raised a few eyebrows when he opted for Fiorentina this summer but he has hit the ground running, scoring two goals in three Serie A games.
Against Cagliari today he had the chance to make it three in three as he raced through on goal after 51 minutes, but after rounding the goalkeeper he twisted and put his shot over the bar.
That wasn't to be the end of his woes however and it soon emerged that he had seriously hurt himself by trying to score. Indeed after the game it was confirmed that the former Bayern Munich man had suffered ligament damage in his right knee.
After Gomez's exit Fiorentina went on to take the lead through Borja Valero after 72 minutes before the visitors struck back late on through Mauricio Pinilla. David Pizzaro was sent off in the dying minutes to round off a frustrating afternoon for Fiorentina.
