Robin van Persie says he hears voices in his head - and they tell him he needs to score more goals for Manchester United.

The Dutchman was in inspired form for the Red Devils last season, scoring 26 Premier League goals following his summer switch from Arsenal to help his new side claim the title.

He's started this season quickly too and has three in four league games to go with his brace in the Community Shield and the three he scored during the recent international break.

However despite being the Premier League's top scorer for the last two seasons, the Manchester United striker says he is constantly urging himself on to do better.

“I kept on hearing a little voice in the back of my head throughout the summer,” he revealed. “It told me that I should have put in even more effort. It was a good season, both for Manchester United and myself, but we could have gone further in the Champions League.

“I was able to enjoy our success and I took the time to let it sink in. But the voice in my head kept on talking to me.”

Van Persie will have the chance to start putting right the wrongs of Manchester United's failed European campaign last season when he lines up to take on Bayer Leverkusen in the group stages of the Champions League on Tuesday.
