David Moyes wants 30 goals from Rooney

David Moyes has set Wayne Rooney the target of scoring 30 goals this campaign, according to the Metro.

Despite intense speculation linking Rooney with a move away from Old Trafford for the majority of the summer, the 27-year-old has now seemingly repaired any rift between himself and Moyes, and scored yesterday as United beat Crystal Palace 2-0.

And now, in stark contrast to quotes attributed to Moyes at the beginning of the season which highlighted the possibility Rooney would play second fiddle to Robin van Persie, the Scot has set a seasonal target of 30 goals for the England striker.

When asked whether or not setting a 30-goal target was a realistic expectation, Moyes said: "I will try to do that. I think Wayne’s aim will be to do that as well. Hopefully we can make that happen.

"The hope is that we get a partnership where folk are saying, ‘My goodness we are having to play against Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney’.

"Everybody is looking to see if those two form a partnership that can score lots of goals."

The idea that Rooney can score somewhere around the figure this year would definitely lean towards the notion that Moyes considers him very much and out-and-out forward.

Significantly it was Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to use him in a deeper supporting role or out on the wing that is thought to have caused the former Everton man to become unhappy at United.
