Fernando Torres has denied rumours that he has been left unsettled by the signing of Samuel Eto'o, insisting the competition is good for the squad.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho brought Samuel Eto'o in from Anzhi Makhachkala in the closing days of the transfer window and has since drafted the Cameroonian in to the starting XI.

Eto'o surprisingly started for Chelsea against Everton on Saturday evening, despite only having several training sessions with his new team mates. Torres was named on the bench whilst Demba Ba was left out of the squad altogether.

The decision was seen as a strange one as Eto'o had been busy on duty with Cameroon during the international break whilst Torres remained with Chelsea having been left out of the Spain squad.

Torres, however, doesn't see Eto'o as a threat but a quality addition, who brings added competition to the Chelsea squad.

The Spaniard remains unconcerned by the fact that he will be competing with Eto'o and Ba for a place in the starting line up.

He told the Evening Standard: “There is now more competition up front but Demba, Samuel and me are not enemies, we are friends. We are team-mates and are fighting for the same targets. I think it’s really good for the team.

“Eto’o is one of the best strikers I have ever seen. I played against him in Spain many times and you can see the record he had there with Real Mallorca and Barcelona, as well as in Inter.

“I am sure he is going to really enjoy this period of his career with Chelsea. He is training really well, I wish him all the best and will help him in every way that I can.”

The 29-year-old believes the signing of Eto'o gives Chelsea a much stronger chance to win titles this season. He also added that places are still up for grabs in the side and is confident of sealing his place in the starting XI.

“That is good for us to play in the space behind. The main thing is to take it step by step, score goals, work for the team and do well when we have the chance and win a trophy.

“Our training has been really good. The tempo is really good.

“In the beginning it is always like this, everyone wants to show [what they can do] and prove that they’re ready to play. We will see during the season how things are going but as of today everything is good.”
