Lazio president Claudio Lotito has claimed that highly-rated Tottenham and Arsenal target Hernanes was the subject of a failed bid from Napoli.
The 28-year-old midfielder, who has caught the eye of a number of European clubs including Atletico Madrid, is said to be keen on seeking a fresh challenger in his career, and almost moved during the summer.
Spurs and Arsenal have both expressed clear interest in the Brazilian, and will likely now step up plans to bring him into their respective folds in the wake of the revelation that Napoli made a formal bid.
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas is reportedly open to the idea of adding to his squad in January, and Arsene Wenger will be looking to add depth to a depleted Arsenal squad which is packed with quality but low on numbers.
It is unclear as to the intricate details of the offer put forward by the Serie A side, but the Lazio president Lotito explained that there was definitely a bid made.
"[Napoli president] Aurelio De Laurentiis had submitted an offer that is not compatible with the value of the player," said Lotito.
"I explained to him that the player was not for sale and the deal is closed immediately."
