Mark Davis is through to the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters, after beating Ali Carter 5-2 at the Grand Stage.

The six-red world champion made back-to-back centuries en route to the second round, where he will play defending champion John Higgins.

There was nothing to separate the players in previous meetings as they both had four wins to their name, but Davis came flying out the blocks in this contest.

He made a 45 and 122 in the opening two frames without Carter scoring, before knocking in his second century of 102 to go 3-0 in front.

The Captain responded with runs of 67 and 65 to bring himself to within a frame of his opponent.

However the 2010 winner of this event was pegged back in the sixth, before Davis wrapped up victory in a scrappy seventh.
