Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has blasted Real Madrid's lenders for financing yet another spending spree.
Pique was speaking to Italian paper, Gazzetta Dello Sport and complained about Spanish bank, Bankia, who've funded yet another spending spree for Real Madrid.
"I read that since 2002, Madrid has spent €1200m," said Pique "We have also spent, but we do not have Bankia," said Pique.
“It is our key to compete with Madrid. We bought Ibra, Villa, Neymar, but each year, what we do not do, having not won anything for a while, is sign Bale, Illarramendi, Isco…”
“We still have Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Valdes, Busquets, Pedro, it is a generation that has cost nothing," added the Spanish defender.
When speaking at a press conference today ahead of their Champions League opener with Ajax, Pique clarified his comments.
"We're lucky to have a great homegrown generation, otherwise we couldn't compete with Madrid. We can't spend as much as they can."
His comments will strike a chord with many. The original big spenders before the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, PSG and Monaco, Real Madrid have often sought to solve their trophy troubles with 'Galaticos' - teams of expensive, yet world class players.
The signings of Bale, Illa and Isco add to the current 'second generation Galacticos' which includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Sami Khedira, Xabi Alonso and Luca Modric amongst others.
