Manchester City open their third Champions League campaign against Vikroria Plzen later this evening.
City manager Pellegrini has urged his side to look forward in Europe. The Blues in the past have been unsuccessful in making it past the group stages after previous disappointing seasons in the tournament.
Pellegrini succeeded former City boss Roberto Mancini over the summer and is attempting to guide the team into the knockout stages of Europe’s premier competition for the first time after two dismal campaigns under Mancini.
The team from Manchester can not afford a poor start in the competition, sharing a group with reigning European champions Bayern Munich and CSKA Moscow - therefore it's vital City hit the ground running in tonight's game.
Reported on Sky Sports Pellegrini stated: "I think we should forget that Manchester City didn't qualify for the next round in the last two editions, and before that just managed to reach the Europa League. It has been three years now that this club hasn't done well in Europe.
"I think that if we want to qualify, we have to respect Plzen, CSKA Moscow and Bayern Munich the same way, and will try to put in our best performance to beat them."
He added: "I think the most important aspect is to make the players feel that they have the capacity, and feel the confidence to compete against teams at the same level."
The Chilean coach is looking for City to build a brighter future in Europe but understands that there are multitude of outstanding teams in the competition.
"I have always repeated the same sentence to my players: If we are eliminated in the Champions League, then that is because we faced a team that was superior to us and who played better than us, and not because they faced a bad playing team."
Pellegrini concluded: "I think that has helped the players a bit, to let them feel that they have their qualities as well."
Manchester City will be hoping that it will be third time lucky for them in The Champions league.
