Demba Ba: I was ready to join Arsenal

Chelsea striker Demba Ba says he was ready to join Arsenal at the end of the transfer window, but is now fully focused on giving his all at Stamford Bridge this season, reports the London Evening Standard.

The Gunners wanted to strengthen their forward ranks with the on-loan addition of the Senegalese international, but the Blues blocked any chance of Ba moving to north London, following the temporary departure of Romelu Lukaku.

After asking to leave Chelsea on loan in order to gain regular action, Jose Mourinho allowed his Belgian striker to join Everton until the end of the 2013/14 campaign, which ended any possibility of Ba following Lukaku out of the exit door.

With just two Premier League goals to his name since joining Chelsea from Newcastle United in a £7.5million deal in January, Ba has struggled to find his best form after drifting in and out of the first-team.

Now, under the guidance of Mourinho, the African hitman is hoping to make more of an impact as he continues to challenge Fernando Torres, and new signing Samuel Eto'o for a starting berth.

"I wanted to play and I want to play," Ba told the Evening Standard. "I was ready to go and play there [at Arsenal] but it didn't happen. I think I'm a good professional and I've always worked hard to get what I have.

"I won't tell you what we said [him and Jose] on the phone, but I told him that if I stay I will keep fighting for the club and the flag. That's what happened. What matters is the next few months with Chelsea, that's it."

Arsene Wenger completed the club-record signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid on deadline day, but after failing to bring Ba to the Emirates Stadium, now finds himself short on options to lead the line for Arsenal, with Olivier Giroud and Yaya Sanogo the only recognised strikers.
