The Uefa Champions League anthem, a sterling piece of music that not only commands the soul of your most impassioned music devotee, but also evokes a rousing emotion that connects football fans across the world. A theme that would be suited for any TV or cinematic drama.
Tonight is the opening for a production of a different nature; an ongoing saga yet to reach full swing. The ongoing debate as to who deserves to be number one - long-serving goalkeeper Iker Casillas, or last season’s signing Diego Lopez.
Initially having lost his place under former Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho and relegated to the bench in favor of Diego Lopez, it was largely believed that the arrival of a new coach would present a much different scenario for Casillas.
But even with new coach Carlo Ancelotti coming in from Paris Saint-Germain, the same problem persists. The Italian has continued from where Mourinho left off, continuing to favor Lopez between the goalposts. This has been rumored to have left Casillas considering his situation at Real Madrid, a midst interest coming in from a number of other clubs - such as Arsenal and the two Manchester giants, United and City.
The current situation may sound bad; but not as bad as one may think.
In fact, Ancelloti has provided the opportunity for both keepers’ to fairly and, quite rightfully, equally stake their claim to the throne. Carlo Ancelotti has decided that while Diego Lopez will continue to remain between the sticks for Real Madrid during the Spanish La Liga, Casillas will take over during cup competitions such as the Uefa Champions League.
Tonight’s game against Galatasaray in Istanbul is unlikely to be Casillas’ only chance to prove that he again should be Madrid’s first choice goalkeeper. But if mistakes are made, they’d most likely be magnified; pointed out and scrutinized publicly by media and unimpressed fans alike. Thus adding fuel to the flames of an already hot topic.
With that said; let’s just see what happens tonight. What drama, if any, will unfold in Istanbul?
