Judd Trump was sent crashing out of the Shanghai Masters as journeyman Michael Holt handed him a 5-1 thrashing in the first round at the Grand Stage.
The world number three’s poor start to the season continues, with the Bristolian having failed to qualify for the Indian Open and not going beyond the last 32 of any tournament carrying ranking points.
35-year-old Holt claimed a huge scalp and his reward is a place in the last 16 for only the second time and a subsequent clash with either Ricky Walden or Martin Gould.
Holt had won two of the three previous meetings between the players and he took the lead in the opening frame before Trump levelled in a scrappy second.
However, from there it was all one-way traffic as the world number 26 rattled off four-straight frames which included breaks of 115 and 97 to progress to the second round.
One of the home favourites, Marco Fu, is also through to the last 16 after whitewashing Cao Yupeng 5-0.
