Robin van Persie moved from Arsenal to Manchester United in search of trophies.

In his first season in a Manchester United shirt, he won the Premier League title that a player of Van Persie's talent deserved.

But he wasn't just part of a title winning squad - he was the inspiration, the talisman and the difference in what was otherwise a mediocre Manchester United team.

After losing the title to Manchester City the season before, United were determined to win it back straight away. The all-out attempts to sign Van Persie ahead of City was the main objective and it proved to be the difference.

However, despite scoring 26 goals in the Premier League season, Van Persie is yet to impress on the European stage.

His Champions League career has seen him score 22 goals in 53 appearances with only three coming from the disappointing campaign last year.

Now reaching the peak of his game, the 30-year-old must transfer his domestic success in to Europe's elite competition. He risks falling in to the abyss of football's nearly men if he doesn't.

If he does start performing in the Champions League, he could inspire Manchester United to a famous Champions League triumph.

In his last season in an Arsenal shirt, Van Persie scored five goals in the Champions League in just six starts. If it wasn't for a horrendous miss in the second leg of the tie against AC Milan, it could've been even better.

Last season he and Manchester United never got going in the Champions League and succumbed in the last 16  to Real Madrid.

But that United squad seemed hellbent on winning the Premier League, meaning their heart was never in it.

Now they have their domestic title back, the focus will be on the Champions League.

The platform is set for Van Persie to blow away the competition on the European stage. When it comes to the big games against the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, United need someone of Van Persie's quality to score the big goals.

With a stubborn defence and a strong midfield, any team will struggle to score against Manchester United this season. All they need to do is rely on Van Persie rekindling that magical form and the Champions League trophy could be on its way to Old Trafford once again.
