In the opening Group B fixture, the game between Real Madrid and Galatasaray did not match up to everyone's expectations. Nobody in their wildest dreams would have thought that Real would win by such a margin.
The game ended as Real Madrid beat Galatasaray 6-1 courtesy of a hat-trick from the world's highest-paid footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo, and a brace from Karim Benzema.
The opening goal was scored by 21-year-old Spaniard Isco on his European debut for Los Blancos. Galatasaray did notch a compensation goal from Umut Bulut .
All of the Real players looked solid and after the arrival of Gareth Bale shortly after the hour mark, their attack looked far more dangerous. Bale set up one goal for Ronaldo from a free-kick while Benzema's first goal was assisted by Ronaldo.
The bad news for Los Blancos from the match is the injury of their skipper Iker Casillas, who collided with Sergio Ramos in the opening minutes and had be be substituted.
Didier Drogba was also taken off in the 45th minute following a tackle from Pepe which saw the striker forced off.
