Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he was contacted ahead of Rafa Benitez by Napoli president, Auerlio de Laurentis about joining the Italian side this summer.
The Dortmund boss was speaking ahead of the two team's clash in the aptly named 'group of death' and has added fuel to the fire by suggesting that Benitez was fall back to Klopp.
“President Aurelio De Laurentiis called me over the summer, yes. He did it before contacting Rafa Benitez, not after!” laughed Klopp.
“If he had called me after Benitez, then that would’ve been daft.”
Napoli have had to replace several key components of their squad this season and when Walter Mazzarri decided to join Inter Milan, Klopp was one of the men rumoured to be replacing him.
The German coach had nothing but praise for Napoli, saying they play "sparkling football" and found similarities between the two sides' loss of key players.
Klopp added: "We are a little like Napoli, in that we lost important players over the summer, but have renewed ourselves.”"
He also revealed that he would prefer Napoli to qualify alongside Dortmund from Group F.
"Each of the teams in the group could go forward in the competition. These are all experienced and solid sides, but I personally hope we qualify along with Napoli.”
Dortmund play Napoli away tonight in a group that also contains Arsenal and Marseille. Generally considered to be the toughest of all the groups drawn this year, Klopp will certainly be hoping his side can get off to a winning start in Italy to give them every chance of qualifying.
