The original big spenders, Madrid have not let themselves be shown up by relative newcomers Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco and Manchester City and broke their own world record to sign Bale and immediately gave Cristiano Ronaldo a pay rise to appease the Portuguese forward.

While a La Liga title is always welcomed in Madrid, the prize they seek is the Champions League trophy and the second generation got well under way last night with a 6-1 drubbing of Galatasaray.
