Freshman Winston shines for Florida State Seminoles
Quarterback Jameis Winston has been stunning in his first two starts
The nation’s top quarterback recruit from the class of 2012, Jameis Winston, or “Jaboo” as he is affectionately known to some fans, has proven after just two games that the hype surrounding his recruitment was justified.
Replacing first round NFL pick EJ Manuel at QB for Florida State, preseason expectations were that Winston would be a game manager for the explosive offensive talent on the Seminoles’ roster.
With two wins already under his belt, Winston has proven that he may be ready for an even bigger role in the offense:
“He has a great touch, and he always knows where the defenders are,” Junior wide receiver Rashad Greene said. “He’s able to throw back shoulder, just perfect balls, he throws them and I pretty much just have to put my hands up.”
Winston is second nationally with a passing efficiency rating of 234.84 and has thrown more touchdowns in his first two games than he has incompletions (6 touchdowns, 5 incompletions).
The Seminoles demolished the Nevada Wolfpack 62-7 and Winston’s performance, both through the air and on the ground, was a major reason for their offensive success. The Seminoles averaged 9.79 yards per snap against the Wolfpack.
This was all on the heels of a stunning Week One performance that saw Winston pick apart a stout Pittsburgh Panthers defense for 356 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start.
In his short two game career, “Jaboo” is 40 of 45 for 570 passing yards with six touchdowns and only one interception. For those who don’t want to do the math, that’s an 89% completion percentage in his first two collegiate games.
Winston has led the Seminoles to an early top ten ranking and his offense is fifth nationally averaging almost 52 points a game.
A matchup with Bethune-Cookman (who recorded its first victory over an FBS opponent in Week 2, a 34-13 victory over FIU) should provide another opportunity for Winston to pad his stats, but the real tests will begin as the season moves into October.
A showdown with the #3 ranked Clemson Tigers is proceeded by a tough game against an improving and undefeated Maryland Terrapin squad.
If Winston can continue to display remarkable efficiency and lead the Seminoles undefeated through this tough stretch, expect Heisman talks to grow louder and louder.
