Arsenal will be active in the January transfer window, according to former star Viv Anderson.

Arsene Wenger pulled out all the stops to sign Mesut Ozil in a club record £42.5m deal on the last day of the summer transfer window.

That followed months of frugality that saw Wenger spend no money and only bring in two free signings in Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini.

Relief  ran through the Emirates when Wenger pulled off the sensational deal for Ozil but the lack of numbers has become evident early on this season.

Arsenal have been forced to fill their bench with academy products  as a string of injuries to key players like Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain left the squad at breaking point.

However, Anderson expects the signing of German international Ozil to open the floodgates and says Wenger will be active when the transfer window reopens in January.

“Signing Mesut Ozil is a big lift for everyone at the football club,” he told talkSPORT.

“They have talked, over the years, about needing top class players and they’ve never gone out and bought them and we thought it would be the same this year.

“It went right to the last minute but he has been a great acquisition and I think they’ll go again in the January transfer window to strengthen them even more,” he finished.
