We all remember how Fernando Torres resurrected his form last season. While wearing that black mask for a broken nose, Torres was unstoppable in Europe - with only Messi and Lewandowski scoring more than the Spaniard. Today Wayne Rooney has been resurrected after wearing similar black headgear, scoring three times in less than a week.

Unlike Torres, Rooney should be able to maintain his current form with or without the headgear. With all the transfer speculation surrounding him this summer, Rooney has returned with little fuss and performed to the best of his abilities.

There has also been ample praise on his fitness levels, with Nemanja Vidic saying that Rooney is in his best shape in five years. Rooney has really worked hard in the off-season to prove his worth to Manchester United.

The season started with an away trip to Swansea where he came off the bench and set up two goals. His impact was immediate and it again showed that Rooney instantly improves United. There were stories about Rooney not celebrating with the players, but he didn't let that get to him and provided a man of the match performance against Chelsea.

Rooney was the spark in an otherwise dull game, and his work rate was appreciated by the fans and manager alike. As if this wasn't enough, he provided another match-winning performance against Crystal Palace. Rooney constantly attempted 50-60 yard passes and almost all of them reached the desired recipient. He also scored a sumptuous freekick at the end of the game.

Rooney provided yet another match winning performance against German giants Leverkusen. He scored two and set up one, taking his Manchester United tally to an astonishing 200 goals. He also looked very sharp in the game, playing with a high intensity. The only game in which Rooney didn't feature this season was the 1-0 loss against Liverpool where United looked average to say the least.

As you can see, Rooney played a very important role in each and every United game this season, and if he continues to work on his fitness he can maintain this form or even better it. The FIFA World Cup beckons and if Rooney continues his form, England could majorly overachieve. Rooney has again started to provide match winning performances on a weekly basis and this season is his best shot at winning the Ballon d'Or, assuming that he continues this form throughout the season and has a good World Cup too.

At his best form, as seen against Leverkusen, Rooney is one of the only people who comes close to the supremacy of Messi and Ronaldo. His lack of fitness and reluctance to regularly train at the gym has made him eventually fall behind the duo but this season he looks fitter than ever and could reach heights that he'd have never imagined.

Rooney is one of only four people to reach 200 goals for Manchester United, and is Britain's all time top goalscorer in the Champions League. Even if Rooney is not considered a legend for his off-field antics, no one can take his records from him. He looks set to break a lot more records this season.
