Adopting a tag as one of the most frustrating players on tour, Ernests Gulbis was once tipped to be amongst the cream of the crop, firmly rooted in the top 10 by now. While all has not gone to plan, the world-number-36 knows how to spice up an interview!

Unafraid to reveal his thoughts in words, the mercurial Latvian's interviews are a far cry from the boring, monologue norm expected from some of tennis' other top players.

In no particular order, here are 10 of Gulbis' greatest soundbites of all time.

On his racquet-breaking habit: “I break around 60 to 70 a year. I felt bad after going to the factory where they make the rackets and I saw all the work they do. Everything is hand-made. They do everything for the players; they really think about what the players need, and then an idiot like me comes and breaks them."

On his time in jail: “It was great. It was great fun; a very funny time. But I’m never going to go to Sweden again. If you go out and meet some girls, and immediately you’re put in jail, that’s not normal. It was very funny, though. I think everybody should go to jail at least once.”

On the tennis courts in Madrid “I came here early, got used to the courts because they are not really straight. They are like playing on a mountain.”

On his successive matches against Federer and Nadal: “I don’t like losing. I like winning. I don’t like to lose beautiful matches. I like to win ugly ones.”

On his unexpected semi-finals Masters appearance: "It feels terrible."

On rumours of whether he flies to tournaments on his father's private jet: "Yes, and I have a helicopter, a submarine and a spaceship.”

On his fellow competitors: “I was really getting pissed to see who’s in the Top 100. There are some guys who I don’t know who they are. Some guys, I’m sorry, with respect, they can’t play tennis. I don’t know how they got into the Top 100. I think I’m much better than them. It’s a motivation.”

On the city of Rotterdam: “I like that the marijuana here is legal. I’m for that. Unfortunately, tennis players cannot do that. We get checked every week. But I like the way of thinking.”

On his drop from the top 100: “You know, I used to say that it’s really tough to get out of the top 100, you know? So I proved to everybody that it’s not so tough, it’s pretty easy.”

On Novak Djokovic: "I swear there is more bitchiness in men's tennis than women's. I don't like Djokovic that much. We know each other since I'm 12. He was a normal guy then, but since his first big success he changed, his eyes changed."
