Tottenham have entered the race to sign Cape Verde international defender Pericles Santos Pereira, according to the Metro.

Manchester City remain front-runners to land the 20-year-old stopper, with boss Manuel Pellegrini hinting that he wants to add to his squad when the January window re-opens in the new year.

The £5 million-rated defender has reportedly won over the Citizens' scouts after impressing at Portuguese outfit Gil Vicente - and a switch to the Etihad is rumoured to be close.

Pericles Santos Pereira - better known as Pecks - is also on the radar of Newcastle, but City head the queue for the player's signature as Gil Vicente have a 'civil partnership' with the Etihad outfit, meaning they get first option on their top up-and-coming talent.

A tall, powerful and tough-tackling centre-half, Pecks has previously been likened to Citizens captain Vincent Kompany and would fit in seamlessley at Manchester City.

Pellegrini is on the look-out for defensive reinforcements and has made the highly-rated defender one of his top January transfer targets.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas knows he faces a fight to land the in-demand international, but is refusing to admit defeat in his pursuit of Pecks.

Like Pellegrini, AVB is keen to strengthen his back-line having sold Steven Caulker to Cardiff City in the summer.

A move to White Hart Lane may seem unlikely, but the north London outfit are desperate to bolster their options at the back, despite Tottenham having already splashed out in excess of £100 million in the summer on new signings.
