Reading have completed the signing of Northern Ireland defender Chris Baird, TalkSport are reporting

Baird has been without a club since he was one of 12 players released from Fulham earlier this summer.

The 31-year-old has attracted the attention of a number of clubs in the Championship; QPR manager Harry Redknapp was very keen on landing the player he had at Southampton.

In fact, the versatile defender had been training with the Rs for the last month and was offered a contract at Loftus Road after impressing during his time in west London.

However, Baird has opted to join fellow newly-relegated side and Championship rivals Reading, managed by another former Saints manager, Nigel Adkins.

Baird has made 134 appearances in the Premier League, mainly for Fulham, where he spent six years scoring four goals.

An established Northern Ireland international, the defender has appeared 61 times for his country without making the scoresheet in a 10 year career.

Reading have made a mixed start to life back in the Championship, they are sitting in seventh with 12 points after seven games.

QPR are the early pace setters at the top with 17 points as they also look for an immediate return to the top flight.
