Ahead of the Manchester derby this weekend, United defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed on Twitter the preparation his team are putting in to take home the three points. A win on Sunday would move United three points ahead of City, with both teams having lost one and drawn one of their opening four games.

Ferdinand said:

"On the way to training. It's derby weekend - no messing about!

"We're going to the Etihad, and we've got our fingers crossed we can get a result like we got last season. Even better maybe.

"We'll be working hard the next couple of days to make sure were in ready and in tip-top condition to go to their place and get three points."

The Manchester United defender will be confident after beating City 3-2 at the Etihad last season. Wayne Rooney scored a brace, with Robin van Persie scoring an injury time winner. United are in good form following their 4-2 win over German side Bayer Leverkusen in mid-week.

Since retiring from international duty, Ferdinand has not suffered a recurrence of his chronic back problem that has kept him out of the United lineup in recent seasons. Since starting a special treatment programme, he has regained his full fitness and a return to first-team action.

Ferdinand has been a Premier League ever-present this season alongside Nemanja Vidic, and the pair have conceded just two league goals so far. City are the league's joint top scorers with eight goals in four games.
