Raikkonen makes Lotus salary claims
Kimi Raikkonen has insisted that the reason he is joining Ferrari is due to money issues with his current team
Kimi Raikkonen has said that the reason he is leaving Lotus and returning to Ferrari is due to salary disputes with the Lotus team. Raikkonen claims he has not been payed by his current team as they undergo further financial issues.
After much speculation, the confirmation of Raikkonen's move was finally announced last week when Ferrari stated that the Finn would partner Fernando Alonso in 2014.
Lotus have been struggling with financial problems since the 2012 season and as a result both Romain Grosjean's and Raikkonen's salaries have suffered. Raikkonen went unpaid for part of the 2012 season and will have to deal with the same for the remainder of this season.
"I like to race, that’s the only reason I am here," the Fin said. "But the reason I have left the team is purely from the money side. I haven’t got my salary."
Raikkonen is said to be on a basic salary of £6.7m at the Lotus team. Speaking for the first time in public about the reasons behind his decision this weekend at Singapore, Raikkonen claimed simply that the financial concerns were the main issue behind his departure.
However, despite all of the disputes at Lotus, Raikkonen has agreed to race for the team until the end of the season.
When asked about his concerns about Lotus financially and technically, he added: "There was a lot of things and for sure they know what it is."
Lotus are yet to comment or respond to Raikkonen's claims.
Raikkonen, who won the 2007 World Championship with Ferrari, insists he is very happy with the move and will look forward to working with the team. In the upcoming 2014 season, Ferrari are looking to build around what is arguably the most experienced and threatening driver duo on the grid.
