Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has responded to Florentino Perez’s claims that Mesut Ozil was sold because he was not psychologically strong enough to play for a club like Real Madrid.

Perez made the comments after Real Madrid fans and players – including Cristiano Ronaldo –questioned his decision to sell German international Ozil to Arsenal on deadline day.

However Wenger, who is likely to hand Ozil his home debut this weekend, has defended his £42.4million signing ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Stoke City on Sunday.

When asked if Wenger had seen or heard Perez’s claims, the Frenchman told reporters: “I have not seen that at all.

“He is 24, he has over 50 caps for Germany, and when you play for Germany, you are under a lot of pressure.

“He won the championship with Real Madrid, and that is a club where there is a lot of pressure.”

Ozil, who was also criticised by French journalist Jean-Michel Rouet this week for his ‘rubbish’ display against Marseille, will be hoping to prove his critics wrong this season – starting on Sunday against Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium.
