Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has provoked the ire of Manchester City ahead of the two local rivals meeting at the Etihad on Sunday.

Rooney has claimed that while the Manchester derby is certainly significant, the Red Devils' clashes with Liverpool are the most important.

“City have had their success recently, but I would probably say that United and Liverpool is still the biggest game,” said the 27-year old striker.

It seems that for Rooney nothing comes bigger than a game against Liverpool. Meetings between the two most successful clubs in English football can be fiery occasions and it is a rivalry of epic proportions.

And fierce rivalries are a fixture of club football the world over. From Buenos Aires to Glasgow, Rome to Cairo; there are certain games that provoke passion more than the rest. Whether it is because of geography or history or simply unidentifiable animosity, for many football fans and players there can be no better feeling than a victory over your biggest rivals.

Here we take a look at the top five rivalries in club football.
