Dejan Lovren: Bargain of the summer?

Some would say that Arsenal's capture of Mesut Ozil would be the signing of the summer, while many others down on the south coast would say that Southampton's acquisition of Croatian defender Dejan Lovren would better that.

Now, of course, Ozil has been the better signing technically, yet for years Arsenal fans have been yearning for a world-class signing.

Yet with a club of Southampton's stature, the £8.5m capture of Lovren is proving to be great business. He has started every game so far of Southampton's league campaign and we learned of his ability immediately in the Saints' 1-0 triumph over West Bromwich Albion.

Then in the harsh 1-0 loss to Norwich he showed he has many more qualities to him than your typical centre-half. He gained the ball just inside the Southampton half before embarking on a dazzling run past many of the Norwich players before unfortunately culminating in disappointment, but this still endeared him to the Southampton faithful for his bravery and fearlessness.

Against West Ham we saw glimpses of the partnership between fan favourite Jose Fonte and Lovren starting to blossom, and finally spring had arrived at Anfield during Southampton's well deserved 1-0 win.

The Saints' defence was solid and fans can really see what a class act Lovren is with an eye for a pass and good control of a ball. His headed goal also demonstrated his heading ability and the threat he possesses from set pieces.

He is able to stay on his feet most of the time and isn't afraid to go in for the risky challenges. He has fantastic leadership qualities and really wears his heart on his sleeve when he plays.

Against Liverpool, Lovren came up against Mamadou Sakho, who Liverpool purchased for a pricey £16m, and after the start to the season Lovren has had, it is very hard to see why Sakho was worth double the price.

Lovren has a very bright career ahead of him, and is already on course for a fantastic season with the Saints.
