Juventus are all set to challenge Liverpool for the potential acquisition of Real Madrid ace Xabi Alonso, according to talkSPORT.com.
The former Liverpool star has yet to agree a new deal at the Bernabeu and with his contract only having one year left to run, he could be available for transfer if no new deal is concluded.
Liverpool have retained a strong interest in the man they sold to Madrid in 2009, and whilst the 32-year-old has been in negotiations with his current club for an extension on his contract, they have so far failed to produce a defining result, leaving his future in doubt.
Whilst Madrid, who it must be said have no shortage of talented midfielders within their squad, may deem him surplus to requirements, there will be a number of clubs hoping to snatch him up if he does become available, including Serie A giants Juventus.
The Italian champions are said to be keeping a close eye on the situation concerning Alonso's talks with his current club, and may move for him if it transpires that his position is for some reason untenable.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will surely be interested in the Spain international, but Juve will be stern competition if the two sides do end up competing for his signature.
