Top five: Brownlow contenders (5)

3. Ryan Griffen

Team: Western Bulldogs

Another All-Australian debutant, Griffen has shouldered Matthew Boyd’s workload, single-handedly carrying a toothless Western Bulldogs side to an underwhelming 15th place.

Nonetheless, Griffen isn’t at fault, with a series of displays that will see him poll extraordinarily well on Brownlow night.

The Bulldogs on-baller experienced a stretch of 11 games (almost half the season) in which he dropped below 29 disposals only once, an astonishing feat.

However, the weight of carrying a football team caught up to the explosive Charles Sutton medallist, as he slowed to a combined 39 disposals over the last two weeks.

Can Griffen’s one-man exploits reward him with the AFL’s highest individual honour, or does his team’s disappointing season overshadow work against him?
