Top five: Brownlow contenders (6)

2. Gary Ablett

Team: Gold Coast Suns

The son of namesake Gary Ablett Snr is firmly rooted within the 'greatest of all time' discussion, with the ‘Little Master’ likely to snatch the title from his legendary father before his career is over.

Long before then, however, Ablett is a big chance to take home the 2013 Brownlow Medal.

Should he win the count, the All-Australian vice-captain will be the Gold Coast Suns’ first ever Brownlow winner, another AFL record to add to his already-impressive resume.

Gazza’s incredible season is highlighted by his 49-disposal game against Collingwood in round 17, a game in which he almost broke his own record for most disposals in a game.

Ablett broke the 30-disposal mark (a rare feat for most players) 12 times in his first 15 games, storming to what looked like a certain second Brownlow Medal (first in 2009 for Geelong), possibly the highest ever number of votes since the introduction of the 3-2-1 system.

However, Ablett’s slow finish to the season could spell catastrophically for his Brownlow aspirations, with experts predicting the bald on-baller to poll only twice after his bye round.

Will Ablett’s limp to the finish line erase his dumbfounding, record-breaking start to his season?
